A large commercial structure fire broke out Saturday morning, October 3, in Greer, South Carolina, prompting a major emergency response and forcing the complete closure of a section of East Wade Hampton Boulevard.

The Greer City Fire Department reported that crews were responding to a large fire at 13775 East Wade Hampton Boulevard, near Biblebrook Drive and Valentine Lane.

Thick black smoke was reported in the area as firefighters worked to contain the active blaze. Multiple fire departments from the surrounding area responded to assist Greer crews as they battled the fire and worked to protect nearby properties.

Reports from the scene indicated that the fire was near an oil refinery and the Toyota of Greer dealership. However, the exact facility involved and the full extent of the damage were still being determined as emergency crews continued their operations.

Wade Hampton Boulevard was completely closed in the area of the fire while firefighters worked at the scene. Drivers were advised to avoid the affected section and use alternate routes.

The closure allowed emergency vehicles and firefighting equipment to move safely while also protecting motorists from conditions around the burning structure.

As of the latest reports available Saturday, the cause of the fire had not been determined. Authorities also reported no known injuries at the time of the initial response, although officials may provide additional information as the incident develops.

The large number of emergency units at the scene reflected the scale of the commercial fire and the additional resources that can be required when firefighters are dealing with a substantial structure containing potentially hazardous or combustible materials.

Heavy smoke from the fire was visible across surrounding parts of Greer as firefighters continued working to bring the blaze under control.

Residents and motorists are urged to avoid the area and follow directions from emergency personnel. Keeping Wade Hampton Boulevard clear remains important while firefighters and other first responders continue their work.

Further updates are expected as authorities determine the cause of the fire, assess damage and provide additional information about the emergency response.
