Bradley Ritger Obituary, Death – Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Dies at 29
Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Bradley Ritger has died at the age of 29 from injuries sustained while responding to a traffic pursuit in western Wisconsin.
Ritger died on October 2, 2026, 11 days after he was critically injured while assisting with a pursuit near the Dunn County and Eau Claire County line.
On September 21, Ritger had deployed a tire deflation device on an Interstate 94 bridge deck as troopers worked to stop a fleeing vehicle. After deploying the device, he moved toward a position of cover before falling from the bridge onto the roadway below.
Emergency responders performed lifesaving measures, including CPR, before transporting Ritger to a medical facility. Despite continued medical treatment, he died from the injuries he sustained in the fall.
Ritger had served with the Wisconsin State Patrol for nearly five years after joining the agency as a member of its 67th Recruit Class. He primarily served in the Northwest Region, including the Dunn County area.
During his career, Ritger earned certifications and responsibilities as a general law enforcement instructor, mobile field force team member and squad leader, and salvage vehicle inspector.
Before joining the Wisconsin State Patrol, he spent approximately three years with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, continuing his career in public service.
The Wisconsin State Patrol remembered Ritger as a dedicated trooper who brought professionalism, integrity and a willingness to help others to his work. Colleagues also remembered his positive presence and commitment to supporting both the public and fellow members of the agency.
News of his line-of-duty death has prompted condolences from law enforcement agencies and communities across Wisconsin. The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office was among those extending sympathy to Ritger’s family, friends and fellow troopers.
A memorial vehicle has been placed at the Wisconsin State Patrol’s Northwest Region Post in Eau Claire, where members of the public can leave cards, flowers and other messages of support for his family and colleagues.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Ritger’s family. Authorities have asked that the family’s privacy be respected while they mourn.
Bradley Ritger leaves behind nearly five years of service with the Wisconsin State Patrol, along with his earlier work with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. His death has left fellow troopers, law enforcement colleagues and members of the communities he served mourning the loss of a young public servant.
